I hope you learn a few things and that you also laugh a bit. If I've done those two thing, I've been successful.
Last night was no exception to the excitement in our household. We were awake and it was the middle of the night. Which child was it this time? No, it wasn't a two-legged one but one of the four-legged ones... and as you might have guessed, it wasn't a cat. It was the dog, or should I say DOGS.
What were we thinking when we added the second one... why even the first? We're in our mid-fifties and the children are growing up. It all happened last Christmas. Just a few days before, my husband took me to the doctor's office. After being diagnosed with bronchitis, we managed to eat breakfast at a pancake house, and then head to the animal shelter to check out the puppies.
After much looking, we picked out the cutest little black lab puppy around. Oh, the kids would be so surprised. We hadn't had a dog for over 20 years only cats and with one child left at home, what other way would we spend our free time when we were "empty nesters".
Otis (he's named for Otis Redding) has turned out to be a great dog. So what was I thinking and doing this Christmas? I was getting a dog for me. You see, Otis prefers my husband and I wanted a dog that I could call my own... into my life walks Zoë, the cutest little black lab that I have every seen.
Zoë is beautiful and has got a great personality. I did not feel the love earlier this morning. About 1:00am my little princess decided she needed to go outside to do "her business". GREAT! Well, so I thought. That first visit outdoors lead to half a dozen more and then Otis joined in. Here we are (my husband is up now) in the middle of the night taking turns taking the dogs out. First Zoë... then Otis... then Zoë... (you get the idea). Just when things were about to happen, they heard something and had to check it out. They just could not concentrate. Oh, I forgot to tell you... it's snowing in Ohio.We have about six inches of wet snow on the ground and it's still coming down.
I HATE standing in the snow, in my pajamas, in freezing weather, in the middle of the night. Guess what? After about an hour or so of their shenanigans, they decided it was playtime. It's 2:30am and we have a 16 month old black lab and a 9 month old black lab running around the house... PLAYING.
What was I thinking? Back in December I was thinking I just wanted a dog. Now I want sleep.
